A 6-year-old shot a teacher at an elementary school in Virginia, police said


A 6-year-old student shot a teacher during an altercation at an elementary school in Virginia on Friday, police said. No students were injured in the incident at Richneck Elementary School, Newport News police said statement.

“This was not a random shooting,” Police Chief Steve Drew told reporters at an evening news conference.

The principal said the teacher, a woman in her 30s, suffered what he described as a life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to hospital.

The boy was taken into custody, the chief said. No one else was involved in the incident, he said.

“We have reached out to our attorney and some other organizations to best help us get services for this young man,” Drew said.

The chief said a gun was used in the altercation and he wants to know where it came from.

The shooting was contained to a classroom at the school, Drew said.

“This was not a situation where we had a student or other individuals moving up and down the halls actively shooting in a sustained shooting incident,” Drew said.

Mayor Philip Jones said the incident “breaks my heart”.

“It’s a dark day for Newport News,” Jones said. “We will learn from this and come back stronger.

The school district said parents and guardians can pick up children from the school’s gymnasium.
