Dogara, and others repudiated Babsheer Lawal on Peter Obi’s approval

Eight members of the affected Northern Christian Labor Party leaders have fallen out with their chairman, Babisher Lawal, over the endorsement of Labor’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

They announced their position in a statement on Friday.

The eight members are former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara. former Deputy Governor of Kogi State; Simon Ashoba, Albert Atyursha, Decnan, Shani, Mela A. Nong, Senior Advocate for Nigeria (SAN); Ishaya Bucca, retired general; Ibrahim Haruna and Leah Olusey.

They said they have not endorsed any candidate yet.

They noted that although the consultations have been completed, the announcement will be made at an interfaith event to be held soon.

They stated that the previous statement by Mr. Lawal, their Chairman, represented his personal view and not the entire group.

Mr. Lawal, the former secretary to the Union Government, in a statement on Thursday had explained the selection of the former Anambra state governor as a departure from the old system. According to him, both APC and PDP are the same.

The eight members of the group said that no one, not even the president, was authorized to speak on behalf of the group.

“We would like to announce that the necessary consultations have been completed and, based on clearly irreproachable empirical data, the group is prepared to take a position that will be made public at an interfaith event to be held very soon.

“Suffice it to say that no one in the group including the chair has been authorized to speak to the public about our position at this material time.

“Based on our modus operandi, it was assumed that our position would be presented to the general public at the above-mentioned event. This has not changed.

“Therefore, the decision to endorse a particular candidate and the statement attributed to the president are only the decision and opinions of the president to which he is fully entitled but not the opinion of the group,” the statement read.

Dogara, and others repudiated Babsheer Lawal on Peter Obi’s approval

The group opposes the Muslim/Muslim ticket All Congressional Progressives (APC) that has Tinubu balla Muslim from the southwest, as a presidential candidate and Kashim Chitima, a Muslim from the northeast, as a deputy.

Since Mr. Chitima was announced as the APC’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, the group has publicly rejected his selection.
