GOAT tops 2023 list of banished school words

(NEXSTAR) — Moving forward, regardless of how you feel about it, the judges of the University of Michigan’s annual list would like you to quietly stop using certain words and phrases, including “GOAT” and “amazing,” among others. Is there any logic in this?

Every year since 1976, Lake Superior State University has published a list of words and phrases to be banned for the new year. More than 1,000 daily terms were banished – some more than once.

School officials explained the process of Nextstar’s WJMN last year. Anyone can submit a word or term they would like to see banned. The school’s English department then decides which words will be banned.

Words and terms banned in 2022 included “no worries,” “you’re mute,” and, topping the list, “wait, what?”

After reviewing more than 1,500 submissions, judges from Lake Superior State University found their GOAT for Prohibition – GOAT, an acronym for “Greatest of All Time.”

“The many nominators did not have to be physicists or grammarians to determine the literal impossibility and technical obscurity of this wannabe superlative.” Yet it’s given to everyone from Olympic gold medalists to “Jeopardy!” champions, as one muckraker jokingly lamented. Meanwhile, other skeptics have noticed posts on social media that wave a picture of, say, multiple cricketers or football stars with a caption about multiple GOATs in one shot,” the school explained in press release. The judges called it “indiscriminate flaunting”.

Once GOAT was an “inflection point” that got its banishment due to losing its original meaning as a mathematical term. “Moving On,” landing at No. 5 on the list, was also kicked out because, as one person noted, “Where else would we go?”

Three of this year’s entries – “absolute”, “amazing” and “it is what it is” – were previously banned but were reinstated this year due to reported overuse.

“Quiet stop” and “gaslight” were chosen due to their imprecision and overuse and abuse, respectively.

The quiet exit, used to describe someone who does a minimal amount of work at their job, even has the potential to be kicked out again in 2024 for “continued abuse and overuse,” Lake Superior State University wrote. Instead, the judges recommended “normal job performance.”

“Is there any logic to that?” was included because, as the judges explain, you have to “always make sense.” Those who introduced the term call it ”filler, insecurity and passive aggression”.

Coming in at number 8 was a “no-brainer”. Why? That’s not even a word.

Here are the 10 words and terms that are banned for 2023:

  1. GOAT
  2. Inflection point
  3. Quiet refusal
  4. Gas light
  5. I’m moving forward
  6. incredible
  7. Is there any logic in this?
  8. Regardless
  9. Absolutely
  10. It is what it is

You can now submit a 2024 expulsion word to Lake Superior State University website.
