Kevin McCarthy loses sixth vote in House Speaker bid as House adjourns
Chaos on Capitol Hill is expected to continue for a fourth day as the Republican Party remains at war over who to choose as the next speaker of the House of Representatives.
By late Thursday, the California Republican had lost 11 consecutive votes. The House adjourned for the night, so a potential 12th vote is on the horizon tomorrow.
Mr. McCarthy said Punchbowl Newshe wouldn’t put a “timeline” on his bid, but he was confident he would succeed.
“We have some progress,” he said. “Members Speak.”
The GOP House leader reportedly offered to make key concessions Wednesday night, including agreeing to a proposed change in the rules for how to oust a sitting speaker in the hope he can secure the 218 votes to oust him .
However, a group of far-right Republicans refused to support him. Called the ‘Never Kevins’, the band features the likes of Lauren Bobert and Matt Goetz who told reporters that the impasse would not end with Mr. McCarthy as speaker.
Despite rumors of a backroom deal that would appease Never Kevin, Ms. Bobert told Politico on Thursday, she was not involved in any negotiations.

From laughing to cringing: The most memorable footage from three days of House Speaker voting
With C-SPAN providing unfiltered live coverage of all the action on the floor of the House of Representatives as votes continue to elect a speaker, the audience got an interesting look at how Congress functions—or dysfunctions, as the case may be.
Normally, congressional rules dictate what cameras can and can’t show, but without sworn representatives there are no such rules.
There were some memorable still images captured by photographers in attendance as lawmakers laughed, cringed, looked frustrated and huddled in tense negotiations between ballots as Kevin McCarthy suffered defeat after defeat.
Here are some of the best images to come out so far:

McCarthy defiant despite 11th humiliating defeat: ‘It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish’
Kevin McCarthy shouted defiantly after a seventh straight loss in his bid to become Speaker of the House, saying it’s okay if some processes “take a little longer” and don’t “meet the deadline.”
On Thursday, the House adjourned for the third time in as many days with deadlock.
However, Mr McCarthy told reporters after the shutdown that “if it takes a little longer and doesn’t meet your deadline, that’s fine. Because it’s not how you start, but how you finish that matters.” He added: “If we finish well, we will be very successful.”

Videos and photos showed new York The Republican sat alone, in stark contrast to his fellow lawmakers, who chatted with other members, as well as some who even brought their children into the chamber to witness the spectacle of the speaker’s election.
Since then he has been much more social.

The battle between the speakers exposes the post-Trump GOP leadership vacuum
The episode also raises deeper questions about the party’s identity and future. It’s a fresh reminder of Trump’s waning influence in the Republican Party — even among the most vocal supporters of his “Make America Great Again” political movement — as he once again seeks the party’s presidential nomination, revealing a leadership vacuum with no obvious alternative for uniting the party and guiding through practical management responsibilities and political challenges.

No members, no rules…
Like Republicans they keep fighting over who will be the next speaker, there are essentially no members in the US House of Representatives – only elected members.
Without a speaker, none of them can take the oath, but the 118th Congress cannot assemble or vote any rules. Parliamentary procedure was discarded in favor of controlled chaos. Members of both parties are unsure whether they can vote or make motions on the floor because there is no speaker to address their demands. No commissions can be formed and no legislation can be passed.
