Authorities have called off a ground search for missing Massachusetts woman Anna Walsh, following her mysterious disappearance on New Year’s Day, officials said.
The 39-year-old mother and real estate executive was reported missing after she took an early flight from Boston to Washington on Jan. 1 and left her home but never boarded her plane, Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley said.
“The ground search by the Massachusetts State Police and Cohasset Police Officers for Anna Walsh or evidence related to her disappearance has been concluded,” the two services said in a joint statement on Saturday.
“Twenty troopers from MSP’s Special Emergency Response Team, a specialized unit trained in search and rescue operations, as well as three K9 teams and the State Police Air Unit searched wooded areas near Ms. Walsh’s home with negative results for the second day in a row,” the statement added.
They continued, “State police divers also searched a small stream and pool with negative results. The search of the land will not be resumed unless police develop new information that warrants it.”
State police are continuing various investigative efforts to locate the missing woman, and Cohasset detectives headed to D.C. on Saturday to follow up on potential leads in coordination with D.C. Metropolitan police.
“Regarding yesterday’s fire at Ms. Walsh’s former home on Jerusalem Road, the State Police Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit and local investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental,” the joint statement added.
In conclusion: “There is nothing further to report publicly at this time.”
Quigley said investigators believe Walsh left her home “early in the morning” on New Year’s Day, possibly between 4 and 5 a.m. Her family was asleep at the time, he said.
Walsh works for Property Tishman Speyer Company in Washington, D.C., and her plan was to take a ride to the airport, but she did not board her flight, according to the police chief.
The flight to D.C. was originally booked for Jan. 3, but police said she left early because of “some kind of emergency” at work.
By January 4, Walsh’s husband and her employer reported her missing.
Police released a description of Anna Walsh, saying she is 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 115 pounds.
