Mega Millions Drawing: Jackpot Now Over $1 Billion After No Big Winner Friday Night; Lottery players in New York, New Jersey win $1 million

NEW YORK (WABC) — The Mega Millions jackpot has grown to an estimated $1.1 billion after no one won big in Friday night’s drawing.

Don’t throw away your ticket though. There were people in New York and New Jersey who took $1 million from the draw.

Here are Friday night’s winning numbers: 20, 63, 46, 59, 3 and a megaball of 13.

The massive $1.1 billion jackpot is the third largest lottery prize in US history. This prize will be drawn in the Tuesday evening draw.

No one has hit the big jackpot after more than 20 draws.

Friday night’s $940 million jackpot was the largest since the $2.04 billion Powerball prize won on Nov. 8 in California. No winner has been announced for this record payout.

The credit for the recent big prizes is actually due to the math – and the more difficult odds.

In the fall of 2017, lottery officials approved changes to Mega Millions that significantly stretched the odds from one in 258.9 million to one in 302.6 million. They made similar changes to the Powerball in October 2015, worsening the odds from one in 175.2 million to one in 292.2 million.

The idea was that by making jackpots less frequent, ticket revenue could increase week after week, creating giant prizes that would attract attention and attract more players who grew up glamourous around the $100 million or $200 million top prizes .

In August 2021, Powerball added a third weekly drawing, which allowed the jackpot to roll over and grow even faster as people had more chances to play and lose. Mega Millions remained with the two weekly drawings.

Thanks to these moves, nine of the top 10 biggest lottery prizes have been won since 2017.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states as well as in Washington, DC and the US Virgin Islands.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Mega millions drawings air Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 p.m

The New York Lottery is the largest and most profitable in North America, donating billions of dollars to support education in New York State.

Revenue is distributed among local school districts using the same statutory formula used to distribute other state education aid. According to the New York Lottery, the formula takes into account both the size of the school district and its income level; larger, lower-income school districts receive proportionally larger shares of school lottery funding.
