Riverside County sheriff’s deputy dies after being shot in Jurupa Valley, sources say

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) — A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was rushed to a hospital and later died after being shot in Jurupa Valley on Thursday, sources told Eyewitness News.

The shooting suspect was also dead after a chase through Riverside County ended in shots fired on the 15 Freeway.

The deputy, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Riverside Hospital, a Riverside Fire Department spokesman said.

Dozens of law enforcement vehicles, many of them motorcycles, gathered outside the hospital to escort the body of the slain lawmaker in a procession to the coroner’s office in Paris.

Authorities were able to identify a suspect and chased him in a pickup truck along several highways in Riverside County. The video shows dozens of police vehicles following the pickup closely as the truck sped away at about 45-50 mph. The suspect fled across the 60 and 15 freeways and the chase ended near Norco under the 5th Street overpass on the 15 freeway south.

Witnesses say at one point they saw the suspect brandishing a gun at other vehicles during the chase.

Finally, the truck was on the edge of the freeway, pinned to the embankment by a bear from law enforcement. The suspect was apparently killed after at least two shots were fired through the pickup’s windshield.

Details of the shooting of the lawmaker were not immediately available, but it is believed the lawmaker was on a motorcycle and attempting a traffic stop in the Rubidoux section of Jurupa Valley when the shooting broke out.

News video from the scene showed emergency vehicles, including more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles, at the intersection of Condor Drive and Golden West Avenue.
