“Everyone is free to say what they want” in India, India’s UN envoy Ruchira Kamboj said.

United Nations:

India does not need to be told what to do in terms of democracy, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, who assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in December, said here on Thursday.

India on Thursday assumed the chairmanship of the 15-member UN Security Council for the month of December, during which it will host landmark events on counter-terrorism and a reformed multilateral approach. The presidency will bring down the curtains on India’s two-year term as an elected non-permanent member of the powerful UN body.

Ms. Kamboj, India’s first woman Permanent Representative to the United Nations, will sit in the presidential seat at the horseshoe table. On the first day of India’s chairmanship, she spoke to reporters at the UN headquarters about the month-long program of work.

Responding to a question about democracy and freedom of the press in India, she said, “In this regard, I would like to say that we do not need to be told what to do in terms of democracy.

“India is perhaps the most ancient civilization in the world, as you all know. In India, democracy has its roots since 2500 years ago, we have always been a democracy. Coming to very recently, we have all the pillars of democracy intact – legislative, executive, judicial and the fourth branch, the press. And very lively social media. So the country is the largest democracy in the world.

“Every five years we hold the largest democratic exercise in the world. Everyone is free to say what they want and that’s how our country works. It is rapidly reforming, transforming and changing. And the trajectory is very impressive. And I don’t You don’t have to say that, you don’t have to listen to me. Others say that,” Ms Kamboj said.
