Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dumfour found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in her car: Police

SAYREVILLE, N.J. (WABC) — Councilwoman Eunice Dumfour of Sayreville was shot and killed in her car Wednesday night.
Dumfur, 30, was found in her car with multiple gunshot wounds on Samuel Circle just before 7:30 p.m., officials said.
Police believe she was the target of the shooting, but there is no clear motive.
Dwumfour was elected to the council in 2021. She was also a business analyst and part-time EMT.
Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said the entire community was shocked and saddened.
“Eunice was a dedicated member of our Town Council who was truly committed to serving all of our residents. The fact that she was taken from us through a heinous criminal act makes this incident even more horrific,” Kilpatrick said. “As mayor, I worked very closely with Eunice when she was on the City Council. In addition to her dedication to our community, I can tell you that she was a woman of deep faith and worked hard to integrate her strong Christian beliefs into her daily life as a person and community leader. On a personal level, I cannot adequately express my grief at the loss of a friend.”
Word of the killing spread quickly overnight among the political community in the state, which has some of the strictest gun laws in the country.
In December, Governor Murphy signed legislation banning concealed carry in so-called sensitive areas in response to last year’s Supreme Court ruling. It was immediately challenged by several ordinances that limited the state’s ability to enforce in certain locations. One was just handed down by a federal judge on Monday.
Sayreville police and Middlesex County officials are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.
Governor Phil Murphy released the following statement saying he was amazed:
“I am stunned by the news of the killing of Sayreville Council Member Eunice Dumfour last night in an act of gun violence. Her career in public service was just beginning and it appears that she had already established a reputation as a committed councilor who took her responsibility with the utmost zeal and seriousness. I send my condolences to the family and friends of Councilwoman Duumfur, her colleagues on the governing body and the entire Sayreville community. Sayreville is a proud, close-knit and safe community, and I know you will come together, as always, with a common goal. The New Jersey State Police is supporting the ongoing investigation and I urge anyone with information to contact either the Sayreville Police Department or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
