Institutional access

Access to content on Oxford Academic is often provided through subscriptions and institutional purchases. If you are a member of an organization with an active account, you may be able to access content in one of the following ways:

IP based access

Usually, access is provided over an enterprise network to a set of IP addresses. This authentication happens automatically, and it is not possible to log out from an authenticated IP account.

Log in with your organization

Select this option for remote access when you are outside your organization. Shibboleth / Open Athens technology is used to provide single sign-on between your institution’s website and Oxford Academic.

  1. Click Sign in with your organization.
  2. Select your organization from the list provided, which will take you to your organization’s website to log in.
  3. When on an institution’s website, please use the credentials provided by your institution. Do not use a personal account with Oxford Academic.
  4. After you have successfully logged in, you will be taken back to Oxford Academic.

If your institution is not listed or you cannot log into your institution’s website, please contact your librarian or administrator.

Library card login

Enter your library card number to log in. If you are unable to log in, please contact the librarian.

community members

Community members’ access to a journal is achieved in one of the following ways:

Log in through the community site

Many societies offer single sign-on between the society website and Oxford Academic. If you see “Login via community site” in the login pane within a journal:

  1. Click Login through the community site.
  2. When on a society’s website, please use the credentials provided by that society. Do not use a personal account with Oxford Academic.
  3. After you have successfully logged in, you will be taken back to Oxford Academic.

If you do not have a community account or have forgotten your username or password, please contact your community.

Log in with a personal account

Some communities use personal Oxford Academic accounts to provide access to their members. see below.

A personal account can be used to receive email alerts, save searches, purchase content, and activate subscriptions.

View your logged in accounts

Click the account icon in the upper right to:

  • View your signed-in profile and access account management features.
  • View enterprise accounts that provide access.

You are logged in, but the content cannot be accessed

Oxford Academic is home to a wide variety of products. An enterprise subscription might not cover the content you’re trying to access. If you believe you should have access to this content, please contact the librarian.

Institutional account management

For librarians and administrators, your personal account also provides access to institutional account management. Here, you’ll find options for viewing and activating subscriptions, managing institutional settings and access options, accessing usage statistics, and more.
