The names of the 11 victims of the Monterey Park shooting


Los Angeles authorities on Tuesday released the identities of all 11 people who were killed in Saturday night’s mass shooting at a Monterey Park ballroom. Many of the victims of the attack, which took place on the eve of the Lunar New Year, were elderly Chinese immigrants.

The six women and five men who were fatally shot at the venue, Star Ballroom Dance Studio, ranged in age from 57 to 76. The studio was a popular retreat in Monterey Park, a suburb of Los Angeles that is home to many Chinese and other Asian immigrants. It was frequented by a tight-knit community of dedicated dancers who went there to take lessons, socialize and keep active.

Among those killed was studio manager Ming Ma. A local who attends classes at the Star Ballroom described him as “a kind of community impresario, recruiting dancers to the studio, hosting karaoke nights and putting on shows.” Another victim, Hong Jian, who was known as Nancy Liuemigrated from China over 25 years ago and frequents the Star Ballroom.

Here are the names of the victims released by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, which has spelled them differently at different points this week:

  • Diana Man Ling Tomwoman, 70

  • Muoy Dai Ungwoman, 67

  • Chia Ling Yauman, 76

  • Wen Tau Yumale, 64 years old

  • Xiujuan Yuwoman, 57
