Representative Kevin McCarthy is not giving up his bid for Speaker of the House of Representatives – he was nominated for the 12th round of voting by Representative Mike Garcia.

“It’s not really about Kevin McCarthy,” he said, pointing instead to a number of other larger national issues for lawmakers to address.

“The issues before us are of enormous magnitude,” he said, adding that the House needs someone who will serve the country with “pure and unselfish intentions, just as our founding fathers did.”

“Winning starts with allowing this body to start working,” Garcia said, adding that the way the nation wins is by working together. “It starts today.”

Negotiators work to try to reach a deal. They hope to get some of the 20 Republican lawmakers who oppose McCarthy to help him get elected.

Some McCarthy allies expressed optimism about the talks, saying “progress” was being made and that McCarthy could pick up some votes today. His path to the presidency is still unclear.

Congressman Matt Goetz is nominated again Representative Jim Jordan for oratory.

“We do not trust Mr. McCarthy’s authority. Because we know who he’s going to use it on, and we’re concerned that it won’t be on the American people. We trust Jim Jordan,” he said.

McCarthy’s staff advised members to leave while Goetz spoke.

And Congressman Lauren Bobert is nominated Representative Kevin Hearn. She said she believes Hearn can unify the Republican coalition.
